This, to me, was a mediocre story, where I enjoyed certain aspects, but I wasn’t very impressed with the overall novel. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness. What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. Instead they “reunite” at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie.

But she doesn’t find him, not when it matters anyway. Their eyes meet, there’s a moment of pure magic…and then her bus drives away.Ĭertain they’re fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn’t exist anywhere but the movies. “Josie Silver writes with a warmth so palpable her characters sneak their way into your heart and stay for a long time.”-Jill Santopolo, New York Times-bestselling author of The Light We Lost It absolutely charmed me.”-Reese Witherspoon “Get ready to be swept up in a whirlwind romance.

With its atmospheric setting – a tiny remote island off the wild coast of Ireland peopled with entertaining and distinctly Irish characters – One Night on the Island is a satisfying and heart-warming story embedded with timely themes: a novel that has it all. First and foremost, the focus of this story is on loving yourself and prioritising your own happiness making meaningful connections with people who reciprocate, as opposed to empty friendships of convenience was another solid theme. Is there love within these pages? Yes, but the love story doesn’t take on a predictable trajectory, and it’s also not the only point of the story. This novel is about so much more than two people from different walks of life being stuck in a remote cabin together. What initially struck me as slightly absurd – marrying yourself – turned out to be incredibly life affirming and highly relatable. I still don’t know why her novels aren’t being adapted into movies – they are utterly perfect for the screen. One Night on the Island is her third novel, I’ve read them all and enjoyed each of them immensely. Josie Silver has such a talent for delivering meaningful and heart-warming contemporary fiction.
